Constant vs Variable Spring Support – When Should Each Be Used?

Constant load spring supports maintain a near-uniform supporting force throughout vertical pipe movement, while variable spring supports allow controlled load variation as the spring deflects. Constant supports are typically used in LNG, refinery, and high-temperature systems where load stability is critical, whereas variable supports are suitable for moderate movement applications.

Detailed Engineering Explanation

Spring supports are designed to accommodate vertical pipe displacement caused by thermal expansion or contraction. The key difference between constant and variable spring supports lies in how the supporting load changes during movement.

A constant load spring support is engineered so that the variation in supporting force does not exceed approximately ±6% over the full travel range. This ensures that connected equipment, nozzles, and welded joints are not subjected to fluctuating loads during system operation.

A variable spring support, by contrast, permits a controlled change in supporting load as the spring compresses or extends. Load variation is typically within 5–25%, depending on design and movement range, with MSS SP-58 advising that variation should not exceed 25%.

Constant supports are generally specified where:

  • Vertical movement is significant
  • Equipment load sensitivity is high
  • Stress analysis requires tight load tolerances

Variable supports are commonly used where:

  • Vertical movement is moderate
  • Load sensitivity is lower
  • Simpler and more cost-effective solutions are preferred

Selection should be guided by pipe stress analysis and compliance with applicable standards such as MSS SP-58.

Technical Comparison

Constant Load Spring Support

  • Load variation: ±6% (typical)
  • Application: High-sensitivity systems
  • Typical use: LNG, refineries, high-temperature steam lines
  • Design: More complex mechanical system
  • Cost: Higher upfront cost

Variable Spring Support

  • Load variation: 5–25% (MSS SP-58 recommends not exceeding 25%)
  • Application: Moderate displacement systems
  • Typical use: General industrial and process plants
  • Design: Simpler construction
  • Cost: Lower initial cost

Industry Application – LNG & Refinery Systems

In LNG facilities, significant thermal contraction during cooldown cycles can impose high stresses on nozzles and structural connections. Constant load spring supports are often required to maintain load consistency and protect equipment integrity.

In refinery or petrochemical plants where movement is less severe and load tolerances are broader, variable spring supports may be sufficient depending on stress analysis outcomes.
