How Do Cryogenic Supports Prevent Cold Bridging?

Cryogenic pipe supports prevent cold bridging by incorporating high-performance insulation between the pipe and structural steel, limiting heat transfer and protecting surrounding materials from extreme low temperatures. This design reduces condensation, ice formation, and structural embrittlement in LNG and gas processing facilities.

Detailed Engineering Explanation

Cold bridging occurs when low temperatures from a cryogenic pipeline are conducted through the support structure into adjacent steelwork or concrete. In LNG facilities operating at temperatures as low as –160 °C, uncontrolled heat transfer can lead to condensation, ice buildup, and potential structural brittleness.

Cryogenic supports mitigate this risk through:

  • Insulated core materials (typically polyurethane foam or polyisocyanurate)
  • Structural outer shells designed to safely transfer mechanical loads
  • Vapour barriers to prevent moisture ingress
  • Elevated shoe designs that separate the cold pipe from supporting steel

The insulation thickness is determined based on:

  • Operating temperature
  • Ambient environmental conditions
  • Heat transfer calculations
  • Structural load requirements

By interrupting the thermal conduction path, cryogenic pipe shoes help maintain structural integrity and reduce the risk of corrosion in surrounding steel.

Technical Highlights

  • Operating temperature: Down to –196 °C
  • Insulation materials: Polyurethane foam (PUF) or polyisocyanurate (PIR)
  • Insulation thickness: 25 mm – 220 mm (application dependent)
  • Vapour barrier: Required to prevent moisture ingress
  • Outer shell materials: Carbon steel (HDG), stainless steel
  • Compliance: MSS SP-58, ISO 9001

Industry Application – LNG Facilities

In LNG export terminals and gas liquefaction plants, cryogenic supports are critical at pipeline support points where significant contraction occurs during cooldown. Without proper insulation, cold transfer can lead to structural damage or corrosion under insulation (CUI).

Properly designed cryogenic supports protect both the pipeline and the supporting steel structure while maintaining load stability under extreme thermal conditions.
