What is a Cryogenic Pipe Shoe?

A cryogenic pipe shoe is a specialised pipe support designed to support pipelines operating at extremely low temperatures, typically down to –160 °C or lower. It incorporates structural load transfer components and insulation materials to prevent cold bridging and protect surrounding steelwork in LNG and gas processing facilities.

Detailed Engineering Explanation

Cryogenic pipe shoes are used in LNG production, gas separation plants, and refrigerated process systems where pipelines carry liquefied gases at sub-zero temperatures.

At these temperatures, carbon steel structures can become brittle, and uncontrolled thermal contraction can introduce significant stress into both the pipeline and supporting structure. A cryogenic pipe shoe elevates the pipe above the support and incorporates high-performance insulation, such as polyurethane foam (PUF) or polyisocyanurate (PIR), to minimise heat transfer.

Unlike standard pipe supports, the insulation is integrated within the pipe shoe assembly to maintain thermal separation at support points, where conventional line insulation is interrupted.

The shoe assembly typically includes:

  • Structural outer shell (carbon steel or stainless steel)
  • Insulated core material (PUF or load-bearing insulation systems)
  • Vapour barrier with external metal protection shield
  • Load-spreading base plate

By isolating the cold pipe from the support structure, the system prevents condensation, ice formation, and material embrittlement.

Technical Highlights

  • Operating temperature: Typically –196 °C to +100 °C
  • Insulation materials: Polyurethane foam (PUF) or polyisocyanurate (PIR)
  • Outer shell: Carbon steel (HDG) or 316 stainless steel
  • Insulation thickness: 25 mm – 220 mm (application dependent)
  • Compliance: MSS SP-58, ISO 9001
  • Optional features: Additional vapour barrier wrap, fire-retardant insulation, noise and vibration suppression

Industry Application – LNG & Gas Processing

In LNG export facilities, cryogenic pipe shoes are essential at support locations where pipelines experience extreme thermal contraction during cooldown. Proper insulation design prevents cold bridging to structural steel and reduces the risk of condensation-induced corrosion.

These supports are also used in gas separation and refrigerated storage systems where maintaining thermal integrity is critical to safe and efficient operation.
